As we gather to commemorate Juneteenth, a day of profound historical significance, I am reminded of the resilient spirit of our ancestors and the enduring legacy of their struggles and triumphs. Juneteenth marks the moment when the last enslaved Black Americans in the United States learned of their emancipation on June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

This day holds profound meaning for Urban Resource Institute (URI) and for me personally. The theme this year, “Their Wildest Dreams—honoring the history of our ancestors while also highlighting present accomplishments and progress,” encapsulates the essence of our journey as an organization dedicated to serving and empowering communities of color.

URI’s roots are deeply intertwined with the struggle for justice and equality. Our founder, Dr. Beny J. Primm, a Black physician and pioneer in HIV/AIDS and addiction treatment, recognized the urgent need for services for survivors of domestic violence, particularly within communities of color. His vision and commitment laid the foundation for URI’s mission to provide comprehensive support and resources to those affected by domestic violence and homelessness.

“Over the years, we have witnessed incredible progress and transformation. From humble beginnings as a 12-bed safe haven in Harlem Hospital to becoming the largest provider of domestic violence shelter services in the U.S., URI has remained true to its core values of inclusivity, empowerment, and advocacy.”

Our team at URI reflects the diversity and strength of the communities we serve. The majority of our staff are Black and people of color, bringing a wealth of cultural understanding and empathy to our work. Their dedication and passion have been instrumental in achieving milestones and creating positive change for the individuals and families we serve.

I am also grateful for the steadfast support and leadership of our Board of Trustees, whose guidance and commitment to our mission have been unwavering. Their collective wisdom and vision have propelled URI forward, enabling us to reach new heights of impact and effectiveness.

Over the years, we have witnessed incredible progress and transformation. From humble beginnings as a 12-bed safe haven in Harlem Hospital to becoming the largest provider of domestic violence shelter services in the U.S., URI has remained true to its core values of inclusivity, empowerment, and advocacy.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us not only honor the struggles and sacrifices of the past but also recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of building a more just and equitable society. URI stands with our communities in the fight against systemic racism, discrimination, and injustice. Together, we can turn their wildest dreams into a reality—a world where every individual is valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.

Thank you to our dedicated team members, supporters, and partners who have been with us on this journey. Your passion, resilience, and unwavering commitment inspire us to continue pushing boundaries and creating positive change.
