This Black History Month, Urban Resource Institute (URI) proudly honors the theme “African Americans and Labor,” celebrating the enduring contributions of Black Americans to the workforce and the unyielding spirit that drives progress, equity, and justice in our society. From the forced labor of slavery to the skilled work that built our nation’s infrastructure, to the frontline heroes who drive change within our own organization, Black labor has been—and continues to be—transformative.
At URI, we recognize that labor is more than just work—it is the heart and soul of our mission. Our remarkably diverse Board of Trustees and Senior Team, along with our predominantly Black and brown staff embody the power of purpose, working tirelessly to end cycles of abuse, poverty, and trauma. Their dedication is not just a job—it is a labor of love fueled by passion and commitment to justice and healing.
From our frontline advocates to our community partners and supporters, each plays a vital role in empowering survivors of domestic violence and homelessness. They provide the lifeline that enables families to reclaim their lives, fostering environments where safety, dignity, and opportunity thrive.
Our Economic Empowerment Program (EEP), Crime Victims Services Program (CVSP), and Legal Education and Advocacy Program (LEAP) empower survivors by fostering economic independence and emotional resilience. EEP offers job readiness training, financial empowerment, and direct employment pathways to break cycles of economic abuse and poverty. CVSP provides trauma-informed counseling and advocacy, while LEAP educates survivors about their legal rights and ensures access to necessary legal support. This work honors the legacy of Black laborers who, despite systemic barriers, built and strengthened communities with resilience and skill. At URI, we carry this fight forward, ensuring survivors have the tools and opportunities to thrive.
We also acknowledge our residents and participants, whose courage and determination to rebuild their lives are a testament to the enduring spirit of Black Americans. Their stories of survival and triumph echo the legacy of those who fought tirelessly for freedom, equality, and the right to a better life.
This Black History Month, let us celebrate and honor the labor of those who came before us and those who continue the fight today. Let us amplify our collective efforts to dismantle systems of oppression, advocate for economic justice, and create pathways to safety and opportunity for all.
Together, we are more than an organization. We are a movement rooted in the legacy of Black labor, propelled by the passion of our community, and committed to a future where every individual has the opportunity to live free from violence, poverty, and injustice.
