Bridging Dreams to Reality: The Transformative Journey of

URI’s Economic Empowerment Program

For many survivors of domestic violence, finding safety, achieving financial independence, and building community are crucial. The Urban Resource Institute’s Economic Empowerment Program (EEP) stands as pivotal guide. A recent graduate shared, “I had plans, but I didn’t know the steps to get there. This program definitely made a great impact and a difference in our lives,” encapsulating the transformative journey these survivors undertake.

On November 21, 17 remarkable women, all survivors of domestic violence and homelessness from URI shelters, marked a significant milestone as they graduated from the Economic Empowerment Career Exploration Program.

This initiative is more than a job readiness program; it’s a catalyst for igniting possibility in lives touched by trauma. Over eight weeks, these women embarked on a transformative journey of self-discovery, capped by a two-month paid internship with esteemed organizations such as the Children’s Rescue Fund and Bronx Education Opportunity Center. Here, they explored diverse roles, sharpening their skills and reclaiming their independence.

“You have faced adversity, risen above it, and taken intentional steps to improve your lives,” said Amnah Basher, Program Manager of Career Services at EEP, underscoring the importance of celebrating every achievement, no matter how small, as each step contributes to significant strides forward.

The value of the internships is twofold. Daniela Perez from the Children’s Rescue Fund observed significant growth, noting, “Our interns have been instrumental by managing files, liaising with different departments, and maintaining our Excel sheets, which has helped our company progress.” This partnership not only builds the interns’ skills but also instills a professional ethos that resonates with real-world demands.

Alex Ansah-Arkorful, Associate Director of Enrollment Management and Records at Bronx Education Center, speaks to the reciprocal benefits: “The interns we’ve hosted expand their learning and experience professional environments, helping us fill essential gaps.” This mutual benefit underscores the program’s effectiveness in providing practical exposure and meaningful contributions to the workplace.

As these graduates step forward, the inspiring words of Amnah Basher echo, “You are co-creators of your universe,” reminding them that their newfound abilities are stepping stones to greater achievements.

“And this program did help me. It helped me with building my confidence in speaking out. And as I always say, ‘closed mouths don’t get fed.’ I want to say thank you to these beautiful ladies that I’m seeing here today. Your next step, your next journey – do not forget the beginning and enjoy every step of it.” – Anonymous

Celebrating these women’s successes paints a vivid picture of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity. The EEP continues to be a pivotal chapter in their lives, showing that with the right guidance, even the loftiest dreams are within reach.
