New York, NY – October 19, 2017—Urban Resource Institute (URI), one of the largest providers of domestic violence shelters and services in New York City, raised critical funds for expansion at its second annual URI Celebration fundraiser on Wednesday, October 18th.

“This year we have a lot to celebrate. We’ve expanded our reach regarding numbers of people served and services provided,” said Nathaniel Fields, president and CEO of Urban Resource Institute, and CEO of the Center Against Domestic Violence. “It remains the case though that domestic violence is far too common in New York, and the demand for shelter and services remains high. This additional support will help us continue to grow and help fill that gap.”

The night honored three of New York City’s exceptional proponents of protecting and serving domestic violence victims. Quathisha Epps, a domestic violence survivor and former resident of URI’s Urban Women’s New Beginnings shelter, was presented with the Spirit Award. Over the past two decades, Epps has used her experience as a survivor to educate communities about domestic violence and to mentor young women who face similar challenges. In addition to educating and inspiring others through her story, she serves and protects the community as an esteemed Lieutenant of the New York Police Department in the 47th precinct in the Bronx.

Cecile Noel, Commissioner for NYC Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence presented the Trailblazer Award to Judith Kahan, the former CEO of the Center Against Domestic Violence (CADV), for her dedication to fighting domestic violence. CADV opened the first domestic violence shelter in New York City in 1977 and Kahan has continuously demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the cause, opening two additional shelters and setting the example for advocates in the city and around the country.

A Kinder World Foundation was honored with the Triumph Award for their recognition of the critical bond that can exist between humans and animals, and the healing potential of this relationship. Since its inception, the Foundation has supported numerous programs to assist pet owners in crisis, including URI’s People and Animals Living Safely (PALS) program. PALS in the only program in New York State that victims to co-shelter with their pets. This year, PALS served its 100th animal living in-shelter.
