Dr-Beny-J-PrimmURI joins the New York City community in remembering former URI president Dr. Beny Primm. As a national thought leader in the fields of medicine and social work, Dr. Primm founded URI and served as its first President from 1980 until 2011, helping to grow the organization into a leading non-profit that provides comprehensive, holistic, and supportive human services in New York City.

In addition to serving as President of URI, Dr. Primm founded the Addiction Research Treatment Corporation (ARTC) in 1969, today known as START Treatment & Recovery Centers (START), a non-profit organization that provides substance abuse treatment, primary medical care and HIV/AIDS services to adults, and mental health services to adolescents.

As a leading expert on addiction and HIV/AIDS, Dr. Primm was active in a number of organizations in addition to URI and ARTC. He worked as an adviser to the National Drug Abuse Policy Office under President Nixon, was named as the first Director of the Center for Treatment Improvement, and served on the Presidential Commission on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Epidemic.

“For many years Dr. Primm served as a great leader and inspiration for all of us at Urban Resource Institute”, said Nathaniel Fields, President and CEO of URI. “His leadership laid the foundation for URI’s work today, enabling the organization to make a real difference in the lives of New Yorkers who are most in need of assistance. The people of New York have lost a truly great friend and advocate.”
