A Commitment to Change

As we commemorate Black History Month (February), I find it vital to reflect upon the progress we’ve made, the challenges we face, and the pivotal role that organizations like Urban Resource Institute (URI) play in the narrative of our collective history. 

This month, we take a moment to remember and honor the achievements, contributions, and resilience of Black individuals who have shaped our world. We also acknowledge that this celebration extends beyond the confines of February, as Black history is an integral part of the tapestry of our nation’s story, one that continues to unfold each day. 

Amidst our reflection, we confront a stark reality: the disproportionate impact of domestic violence and homelessness on Black and brown communities across marginalized populations. The recent DV homicide numbers highlight a troubling trend that cannot be ignored. Intimate partner homicides have surged by 29% citywide; And tragically, Black and Hispanic women continue to bear the brunt of this violence – a stark reminder of the injustices that persist. 

At URI, we are acutely aware of these challenges. As a Black-led organization, we understand the profound responsibility we bear in addressing these disparities. Our staff, comprised of 80% people of color, reflects the communities we serve. We are dedicated to standing alongside domestic violence survivors and homeless families, advocating for change, and dismantling the systemic barriers that perpetuate domestic violence, poverty, and trauma. 

Our commitment extends beyond providing safe havens; it encompasses working tirelessly to end the cycles of violence and homelessness that disproportionately affect communities of color. We are deeply rooted in these communities, and our resolve to effect change has never wavered. 

Black History Month serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength that Black individuals and communities have demonstrated throughout history. It’s a testament to the power of collective action and the capacity for change, even in the face of daunting challenges. 

As we continue to honor Black history and celebrate the achievements of Black individuals, let us also recommit ourselves to the work that lies ahead. Together, we can be the agents of change, dismantling the systems that perpetuate violence and injustice. At URI, we are dedicated to this cause, and we invite you to join us in this important journey toward a safer, more equitable future for all.
