URBAN RESOURCE INSTITUTE APPOINTS ELYSE BARBELL AS VICE PRESIDENT OF PEOPLE & CULTURE
NEW YORK (September 13, 2023) – Urban Resource Institute (URI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Elyse Barbell, SHRM-CP, as the organization’s new Vice President of People & Culture, reporting to Beverly Riddick, Chief Operations Officer. Barbell brings decades of experience in talent acquisition and human resource operations to URI as the largest provider of domestic violence shelter services within the United States.
“We are so pleased to have Elyse join our ranks as we continue to provide safe shelter and comprehensive services to homeless families,” said Riddick. “Her experience in nonprofit executive recruitment within New York City has come at a critical time for the organization. As we seek to create greater impact as an organization of choice, having team members who feel engaged and connected will be a priority.”
As a leading service provider for homeless families, URI’s direct services, prevention, and intervention programs impact more than 40,000 individuals annually. Barbell will be responsible for building best-in-class talent acquisition, employee retention, and engagement strategies.
Barbell most recently spent seven years developing recruitment and retention strategies for Women in Need as the organization’s Vice President of Human Capital. Barbell began her career in the field of education, serving as an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instructor and Refugee Services Coordinator at Brooklyn College before expanding into workforce and leadership development. In her previous role as Executive Director of the Literacy Assistance Center, she oversaw the development of the Adult Literacy Information and Evaluation System (ALIES) data collection system for NYC adult education programs, and the creation of the Literacy Assistance Center (LAC) Academy.
A native New Yorker, Barbell holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hofstra University, and a certificate in nonprofit leadership from Columbia University.
