Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the vibrant cultures, resilience, and enduring contributions of Hispanic and Latine/Latinx communities. Guided by this year’s theme—“Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future”—we uplift the legacies that shaped us and the leaders who continue to inspire change today.
At Urban Resource Institute, this celebration connects deeply to our mission to end domestic violence and homelessness. October also marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and we cannot ignore the devastating reality that intimate partner homicides are on the rise. In recent years, intimate partner homicides in New York City have risen sharply, with Hispanic women facing a disproportionate impact. Hispanic women, comprising 28% of the population, account for 36% of these tragedies.
These numbers are not just statistics; they represent lives lost, families shattered, and communities in pain. That is why URI’s work—providing emergency shelters, supportive housing, prevention, and economic empowerment—is urgent and essential. Together with our partners and supporters, we honor the past, confront the challenges of today, and inspire a future where every family can live free from violence and fear.
Through our collective efforts, we can help end domestic and intimate partner violence within the Hispanic community—and in all communities. Learn how you can help by visiting www.urinyc.org.
