Senior Accountant



The Urban Resource Institute (URI), a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization established in 1980, operates shelter, legal and job training programs for domestic violence victims, residential and vocational programs for individuals with developmental disabilities, and residential programs for homeless families. With a $73 million annual budget with over 600 staff, URI promotes safety, justice, health, and independence for vulnerable individuals and families residing in New York City.  Reporting to the Vice President, Finance the Senior Accountant is responsible for the oversight and daily management process of preparing voucher documentation for URI’s government contracts and grants.


  • Manage the status of accounts and balances and identify inconsistencies
  • Provide daily data entry of voucher information in order to centralized process
  • Prepare monthly voucher reports for government contracts and grants
  • Files voucher invoices electronically and/or hard copies
  • Monitor expenses that could not be processed due to budget caps or other reasons
  • Monitor advances and advance recoupments from payments
  • Assist in the monthly financial closing and year-end audit requirements
  • Perform account reconciliations, investigating any irregularities
  • Provides customer service to internal and external entities and answer voucher related questions
  • Assist Vice President, Finance with expense analysis, budget reporting and budget modifications
  • Communicates as needed with Vice President, Finance to ensure accurate invoicing
  • Other duties as requested based on department, program and/or organizational needs.



  • Bachelors’ degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ of experience in accounting, business or voucher analysis
  • Experience with NYC HHS Accelerator is a plus
  • Knowledge of accounting ledgers and familiarity with accounting systems software
  • Strong mathematical skills; ability to calculate figures used routinely
  • Excellent customer, analytical, organizational and operational experience
  • Demonstrated experience with managing multiple projects within given deadlines; specifically, in projects requiring significant resources, cross-functional involvement in fast-paced high energy working environment
  • Established computer aptitude and must have proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; e is required
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and communications skills with the ability to work well with people of diverse educational, cultural and professional, etc. backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage and organize multiple projects in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
