Operations Analyst – Internship


The Urban Resource Institute (URI), a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization established in 1980, operates shelter, legal and job training programs for domestic violence victims, residential and vocational programs for individuals with developmental disabilities, and residential programs for homeless families. With a $50-55 million annual budget with over 600 staff, URI promotes safety, justice, health, and independence for vulnerable individuals and families residing in New York City.  Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, the intern will assist in data analysis that will enable us to improve our key metrics. In this role, the intern will have the opportunity to review data to help us develop insights and/or gaps in our current operations that will inform the composition of an Operations policy and procedure manual. The intern will also work across departments to conduct research, investigate workflows, conduct internal audits on business procedures, and recommend appropriate changes. 


  • Review business processes and company policies and procedures to make a variety of recommendations to enhance workflow and improve efficiency 
  • Actively monitor URI’s ongoing operations practices and make recommendations to enhance business model, processes and structure
  • Research and collect data and report out from information provided by URI staff, policies, procedures and third party sources, to serve as the basis of the URI operations manual
  • Research best practices in the industry on policy manual models and content for adaption based on URI needs
  • Deliver monthly reports to operations team and others on industry trends and how to maximize those trends by modifying URI’s procedures
  • Support ad hoc projects and activities as required
  • Communicate effectively with URI staff to obtain, analyze and discuss policies, procedures and best practices 
  • Other administrative duties as requested based on department and/or organizational needs.


  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Business Administration, Operations Research or related field preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Google docs, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) with advanced Excel; Pivot tables is a must
  • Must be mathematically inclined, to develop, generate, and review statistics, graphs, and numeric data
  • Strong analytical, administrative, written and oral communication skills
  • Strong project management skills with solid problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and high concern for data accuracy
  • Experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse team, maintaining a healthy work environment for staff that encourages professionalism, respect, equality, diversity and continuous improvement
  • Ability to work independently assesses priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines in a high functioning environment
