Director, Institutional Partnerships



The Urban Resource Institute (URI), a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization established in 1980, operates shelter, legal and job training programs for domestic violence victims, residential and vocational programs for individuals with developmental disabilities, and residential programs for homeless families. With a $50-55 million annual budget with over 600 staff, URI promotes safety, justice, health, and independence for vulnerable individuals and families residing in New York City. Urban Resource Institute is seeking a dynamic and passionate leader to serve as its Director of Institutional Partnerships. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Institutional Partnerships will lead the strategic direction, implementation, and overall management of the organization’s institutional giving portfolio consisting of foundations, corporations, and government. She/He/They will serve as a key member of a small but nimble Development team.  This is an ideal opportunity for a seasoned professional with a track record of growing and sustaining financial support from institutions to drive significant impact in support of URI’s mission.


  • Develop and refine a comprehensive annual institutional giving strategy in alignment with URI’s organizational vision and goals
  • Act as the lead author for securing six and seven-figure gifts from foundations, corporations, and government agencies
  • Cultivate, steward and close gifts from new and existing institutional funders through site visits, conference calls with URI’s CEO and regular programmatic updates
  • Collaborate with all departments, including Programs, Finance, Operations, and Marketing & Communications to obtain accurate data and progress updates required for proposal narratives and impact reports
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of ambitious capital campaigns
  • Ensure the efficient use of fundraising systems and processes to submit timely reports to funders
  • Other duties as requested based on department, organizational need and as directed by the CDO.



  • Passion for the Urban Resource Institute’s mission and core values
  • Minimum of 5 years in an institutional giving role, with at least 10 years of nonprofit development and fundraising experience
  • Bachelors’ degree required; Masters preferred
  • Currently managing a portfolio of 20 or more institutions with a total value of more than $2.5-million, with experience completing capital campaigns
  • Experience with successfully submitting proposals to and securing funds from the city, state, and federal agencies
  • Track record of successfully prospecting, engaging, cultivating, and closing gifts from foundations, corporations, and/or government agencies
  • Exceptional relationship building, influencing skills, communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire a diverse range of audiences
  • A high degree of cultural competence and belief in the value of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills along with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize within a fast-paced working environment
  • Sense of humor
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat etc.
