Black History Is American History

Feb 1, 2026

As we welcome Black History Month, we do so not just with respect but also with a rededication to the truth that Black History is American History. It is the story of courage, change, resilience, and progress that has shaped every corner of our society, from art and activism to science and leadership.

At Urban Resource Institute, we are committed to building safe, stable, and empowering pathways for individuals, families, and communities who are too often pushed to the margins of society. The people we serve are navigating the deep and lasting impacts of violence, poverty, homelessness, and trauma. These challenges are not accidental but are rooted in generations of structural inequity. Black History Month reminds us why this work matters. It affirms that the fight for justice, safety, and dignity is ongoing and that we must keep showing up, advocating, and creating space for healing and transformation.

At a time when divisions and social regression seek to silence, erase, or rewrite history, our role as an organization and as citizens is unmistakable. We must keep working for truth and raise the voices of those whose advancement was hard-won by generations who came before us. Black history is not a sidebar. It is central to the American journey.

Even amid adversity, we remain hopeful. History shows us that progress is not always linear, but it is possible. Together with our staff, partners, clients, and supporters, we are making history too.

Let this month be a reminder that we are stronger together. When we honor the past, we empower the present. And when we work in unity, we can transform the future.

With hope and determination,
